Exploring Generosity: A Journey of Reflection and Giving
As I reflect on my upbringing and the values instilled in me by my parents and grandparents, one value stands out prominently—generosity. It’s a quality I learned through their teachings and by observing their actions. Recently, my wife Kris and I had the privilege of attending a “Journey of Generosity” (JOG) event at Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville, Pennsylvania, where I am a board member. This experience deepened my understanding of generosity and its impact on our lives.
Growing up, my family played a significant role in shaping my beliefs about generosity. My parents and grandparents taught me the importance of giving, not just materially but also emotionally and spiritually. It was through their actions that I witnessed the profound effect of a generous heart.
The JOG event we attended was a pivotal moment in my journey. These events, organized by charitable and philanthropic organizations, aim to foster discussions and experiences related to generosity and philanthropy. During the JOG event, we engaged in reflective conversations, shared personal stories, and learned from others about the significance of generosity. These experiences left a lasting impression on us.
Generosity, I’ve come to realize, isn’t merely about giving material possessions. It’s about giving your time, empathy, and compassion. It’s about making a positive impact on the lives of others and the world at large. Acts of generosity have the power to uplift spirits, mend communities, and create lasting change.
The JOG event held at Black Rock Retreat held special meaning for me. The retreat was founded by my grandfather, a church leader and businessman, who saw the need to provide city children with a space to experience nature and escape the troubles of urban life. His generosity, along with that of many others over the years, has allowed this camp to flourish and become what it is today—serving over 25,000 youth and adults as a sanctuary for growth and discovery.
Inspired by our JOG experience and the legacy of generosity we’ve inherited, Stewardship Advisors has decided to become JOG facilitators. We are actively planning future JOG events to engage individuals, families, and groups in meaningful discussions about giving and philanthropy. If you’re interested in joining these events or learning more about our mission, please contact our office.
Generosity isn’t just a value; it’s a way of life that has the power to transform individuals and communities. Through my family’s teachings, the JOG event, and the legacy of Black Rock Retreat, I’ve come to appreciate the profound impact of generosity. It’s a journey worth embracing—one that can lead us to a more compassionate and giving world.
